'The offer was also too good to refuse'

Former Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has explained his decision to join Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca.

The 37-year-old was officially unveiled as the new head coach of the North African outfit in a press conference on Thursday evening.

Mokwena had landed in Morocco hours before to a frenzy of paparazzi following days of speculation that he could be the next man at the helm as Wydad bid to return to the summit of African football.

The well-spoken coach had initially intended to take a break from professional coaching following his less-than-ceremonious exit from Mamelodi Sundowns.

However, in the space of a week, that ship has turned a full 360 degrees, raising questions on what could have convinced Mokwena to abandon his planned 'sabbatical' and board a flight North-bound.

Speaking at his unveiling, the former Orlando Pirates and Chippa United coach gave a brief response to the question.

"Because they (Wydad) chose me," he told journalists.

"They showed so much interest in me, they were on top of my agent, they were on top of me.

"One wise guy said to me: 'Go where you're loved' and I feel loved and appreciated by the Wydad fans, and that's why I'm here.

"Of course, who says no to a club like Wydad? It's impossible and the offer was also too good to refuse (laughs).

"But I'm happy to be here, I'm very happy to be here."

Mokwena joins a growing list of South African coaches determined to make their mark on the African continent, which includes Pitso Mosimane who won the Champions League twice with Al Ahly, Fadlu Davids who recently joined Simba SC as head coach and Morena Ramoreboli at Jwaneng Galaxy in Botswana.
