Downs happy to return to Loftus, pitch concerns allayed

Mamelodi Sundowns have expressed joy at returning to Loftus Versfeld Stadium for the CAF Champions League quarterfinal match against Esperance on Tuesday.

Sundowns return to their traditional home venue after almost a month since hosting Orlando Pirates in a Betway Premiership clash there in early February.

The Brazilians beat Bucs 4-1, but the victory did not sit down well with opposition coach Jose Riveiro due to the poor surface of the field.

Masandawana moved their last Nedbank Cup fixture against Sekhukhune United last Friday to Lucas Moripe Stadium due to a rugby encounter played scheduled a day later at Loftus.

"My opinion is clear, I always prefer to play Loftus. But I always prefer to play in good conditions. Since the very first moment I arrived here, I have been fighting for the pitches to be in fantastic conditions in terms of the turf, the height of the turf, and watering the pitch because as I said, and I repeat, I prefer good football," Cardoso told journalists post-match.

Despite the United Rugby Championship match between the Blue Blues and Italian side Zebre Parma, the tactician has assured the Yellow Nation the 51,6720-seater venue will be in perfect condition to welcome the Tunisian club on Tuesday.

"Regarding the conditions at Loftus, I don't have my phone here, I would show that we have a group on WhatsApp that every day there is an update from our greenkeepers who are working at Loftus.

"And I know because I saw the photos two days ago, the pitch is in very good condition. There is a rugby match tomorrow, but the turf will be thick so that doesn't get spoiled," he assured.

The Tshwane giants have announced they will allow free entrance to fans clad in the team colours for the gigantic fixture, where a win is a must before heading for the second leg in the volatile surroundings created by Esperance fans at home.
