Mixed fortunes for PSL stars in World Cup qualifying bid

With the FIFA World Cup qualifiers hotting up, KickOff wraps up how PSL stars, besides the big teams, performed before the end of the international break.

Stellenbosch were represented by Brian Onyango of Kenya, who was in the line-up in a 3-3 draw against Gambia on Thursday but the former Mamelodi Sundowns defender was dropped to the bench on Sunday in a 2-1 defeat to Gabon.

Benni McCarthy's charges are lying fourth in Group F and have slim chances of qualifying, eight points behind log-leaders The Panthers.

Chippa United goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali was in goal for Nigeria as they beat Rwanda 2-0 on Friday in Group C and boosted their chances of qualifying. The Chilli Boys midfielder Thabo Makhele was in the line-up for Lesotho in a 2-0 defeat to Bafana Bafana on Friday.

AmaZulu's Riaan Hanamub featured for Namibia as they edged Malawi 1-0 on Thursday and increased their chances of qualifying, along Cape Town City forward Prince Tjiueza.

Golden Arrows shot-stopper Ismael Watenga has been preferred for Uganda over Richards Bay's Salim Magoola, who was not in the squad, as The Cranes suffered a 3-1 defeat to Mozambique on Thursday.

Zimbabwe have had a number of PSL players over the years, but Marumo Gallants goalkeeper Washington Arubi was the only player from the Betway Premiership in the line-up, in their 2-2 draw against Benin on Thursday, which somewhat favoured Bafana Bafana in Group C.

SuperSport United striker Terrence Dzvukamanja only came off the bench for The Brave Warriors with six minutes to go in place of former Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Khama Billiat.

Gallants forward Gabadinho Mhango was in the line-up for Malawi as they lost 1-0 to Namibia on Thursday. The Flames' chances of qualifying were affected, as they dropped down to fourth in Group H, five points behind second placed The Warriors and seven points behind leaders Tunisia.

Malawi will end their March programme with a trip to Tunisia on Tuesday night.
