Latest coaching change demonstrates PSL insecurities

For whatever contributed to Brandon Truter's departure at Sekhukhune United, results played a role as he became the tenth man to lose his title as a head coach in the DStv Premiership in this calendar year.

Truter joined Sekhukhune in November 2022 on a three-year deal but lasted just 12 months.

While there could have been a concoction of other disputed reasons that contributed to Truter's stay at Sekhukhune turning sour the issue of results is what is at the forefront.

'Brakkies' was in charge for 40 games and started off brightly with four wins and one draw as Sekhukhune eventually finished in the top eight.

The other positive was reaching the Nedbank Cup final which they lost to Orlando Pirates.

However, the 2023/24 season, didn't deliver on the progress that was expected with disappointing exits from the MTN8 and Carling KnockOut Cup and had already lost five in the opening 10 league games.

Whether Truter was a success or failure at Sekhukhune is for the decision makers, but the conclusion of his expected separation highlights the frequency of changes in the DStv Premiership.

Besides Sekhukhune, Cape Town Spurs, Richards Bay, Royal AM, Kaizer Chiefs, Chippa United, AmaZulu, Polokwane City, Moroka Swallows, and Golden Arrows have all had head coach related changes since the beginning of the year.

Spurs sacked Shaun Bartlett, Richards Bay brought in Kaitano Tembo, Royal AM brought back John Maduka while Chippa also recalled Morgan Mammila, Polokwane are in turmoil after Lehohonolo Seema left, and Swallows now have Steve Komphela since the start of the new season.

Arrows lost one half of their co-coaches in Vusumuzi Vilakazi who has since been to Chippa United and is now a senior coach at Richards Bay.

The major highlight of changes has been at Chiefs where Arthur Zwane made way for Molefi Ntseki who has also since stepped aside for Cavin Johnson.

The Motsepe Foundation Championship is worse with more than 10 clubs having made changes this year.
