Chiefs head into the clash in buoyant mood following their 1-0 win over previously-unbeaten Mpumalanga Black Aces midweek, a result which lifted them to fourth in the PSL standings on 14 points from eight matches.
Pirates, meanwhile, have endured a difficult start to their 2015/16 League campaign, suffering their fourth loss in Wednesday’s 2-0 defeat to Golden Arrows. The Bucs languish in 13th place in the PSL standings, having claimed just five points from seven matches, and will be without midfielder Lehlogonolo Masalesa, who is suspended for this encounter.
A look at the history books sees Chiefs leading the way in head-to-head statistics: in 59 League matches since 1985, Amakhosi have claimed 24 wins compared to Pirates’ 12, with 23 draws.
Last season Chiefs won four out of a possible six points off their rivals, beating them 2-0 before a goalless stalemate in the return leg, with four of the last six League encounters between the two sides ending in draws.
The team line-ups for this afternoon have been announced, with Chiefs making one change from the side that beat Aces midweek: Willard Katsande replaces Lucky Baloyi in midfield, who has to be content with his spot on the bench.
Eric Tinkler has made four changes to the side that lost to Arrows on Wednesday, as Ntsikelelo Nyauza comes in to replace the injured Happy Jele, with wholesale changes taking place in midfield: Mpho Makola, Thabo Rakhale and Thandani Ntshumayelo are brought in for Mugerwa, Mvelase and Memela, with Issa Sarr remaining in the starting line-up, along with goal-minder Siyabonga Mpontshane.
