1. The first ever Soweto Derby goal was scored by Orlando Pirates legend Percy ‘Chippa’ Moloi in the first match between the two sides on 24 January 1970. Pirates won 6-4.
2. The last player to score a hat-trick in the Soweto Derby was Jerry ‘Legs of Thunder’ Sikhosana, who got three in Pirates’ 4-1 win in November 1996.
3. The legendary Pule ‘Ace’ Ntsoelengoe, who was a Derby scorer on 19 occasions, remains the leading scorer. Chiefs duo Nelson ‘Teenage’ Dladla and Abednego ‘Shaka’ Ngcobo scored 11, while Pirates’ top scorer in the derbies is Jomo Sono with 9 goals to his name.
4. Six players have scored for both teams in the Derby and they are Marks Maponyane, Marc Batchelor, Donald ‘Ace’ Khuse, Blessing Mgidi, Gabriel Khoza and Jerry Sadike.
5. The last player to score an own goal in the Derby is Daine Klate… That was on 13 November 2013 at FNB Stadium when Chiefs won 3-1.
6. Kaizer Chiefs captain Siphiwe Tshabalala holds the record for the most appearances in the Soweto Derby with 23 [official matches] since playing in his first one back in 2007 and he has scored four goals. Chiefs have won eight, lost five and drew 10 with 'Shabba' on the field.
