Form of Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates suggests historic Soweto Derby

Never before have Chiefs and Pirates gone into a league meeting of this fixture, with both clubs coming off the back of a defeat in their previous league matches since their first ever PSL era league contest on January 18, 1997.

Prior to that match, which was won by The Bucs courtesy of a Jerry Sikhosana goal, AmaKhosi had played a goalless draw away to Hellenic while Pirates had won 2-1 at home against Cape Town Spurs, with Andries Sebola scoring a brace.

In the league games played ahead of the reverse fixture of that 1996-97 season Chiefs won 3-1 against the same Greek Gods, while Pirates were restricted to a goalless away to Umtata Bush Bucks.

Since then there has never been a Soweto derby league meeting played with both clubs having lost their previous league outings.

Even through the two campaigns (2001-02 2006-07) when Chiefs couldn’t finish in the top 8 they never went into a league derby having lost the league game prior to The Derby.

Saturday will mean the country’s biggest football match has both clubs with their tails between their legs after they lost last weekend.

Steve Komphela and Eric Tinkler are now the first set of coaches to carry that black mark on their shoulders.

Pirates fell 1-0 to Jomos Cosmos last week Saturday with Chiefs then tumbling 2-1 the following day in a league match that they decided to play in Cape Town.

Now, with The Bucs still stuck in the bottom half mud Tinkler will be desperate for all three points to buy himself more time on that sizzling hot bench while Komphela surely knows that his symphathisers will wilt if he hands all three points to his arch rivals just like he did in the reverse fixture.

With melancholy having enveloped both clubs this week after their defeats in the lead-up to this match both clubs will know they owe the 90 000 plus fans that will swarm FNB Stadium a cracker of a match and one that has plenty goals and ultimately a winner.

And though it still carries so much weight what is disappointing about this particular contest is the fact that this is a match whose winner will not even move into the top three on the standings.
