Former Pirates captain Edward Motale predicts 'slow-paced Soweto Derby draw'

Motale made his professional debut in November 1986 for Jomo Cosmos against Pretoria Callies and joined the Buccaneers in 1994 via Dynamos. The ex-leftback was a crowd-favourite during his days with the Buccaneers and went on to skipper the team when they lifted the CAF Champions Cup in 1995.

“This match will be a draw played at a slow pace,” Motale tells snl24.com/kickoff. “If you can look at the matches between the two sides over the last few years, they have mostly been draws with wins for either side here and there. So I don’t see anything different this time around.”

Motale believes that the form book will count for nothing come Saturday.

“When you play against Kaizer Chiefs having won the last five matches in a row, it means nothing during the Derby. You are judged based on what happens on that particular day. It’s the same when you go to the Soweto Derby having lost a lot of matches – fans will forgive you when you win the Soweto Derby. But I would like to wish both coaches good luck because they are both local coaches,” he adds of Chiefs' Steve Komphela and Pirates' Eric Tinkler.
