The Chiefs executive chairman is adamantly standing by his decision of opting for an experimental appointment of Komphela at the beginning of the season, rising to stand by the former Bafana Bafana skipper.
Right now Komphela still hasn’t convinced many in the stands that he was genuinely the right choice for the job and losing to Platinum Stars in the week leading to the Derby while falling eight points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns hasn’t helped his cause.
Neither does reaching two cup finals – MTN8 and Telkom Knockout – and then going on to lose both.
Still, Motaung maintains that he will forever be responsible in dealing with the issue of his coach.
“I don’t think we are supposed to apply a knee-jerk reaction to any situation that happens now,” responds Motaung on being questioned about the situation regarding his coach, who still divides opinions in the stands about his abilities leading to the reverse fixture of that blockbuster meeting with Orlando Pirates.
“If we do that then it means we obviously don’t know what we are doing ourselves. So just to make an example Pitso Mosimane, two, three months ago was seen, perceived by some of the Sundowns supporters as being useless for the team. Where is he today? So it doesn’t necessarily mean that when a team goes into a slump for whatever reason you now have to single out one individual. If you are going to fire a coach it must be based on fact and proper analysis of what his weaknesses are. Every game obviously has to be judged by its content. As far as Chiefs is concerned we are not going to react based on the result, we have to react based on the performance of the team in general and everything else that goes along with it,” says Motaung.

The Chiefs boss adds that there is a need for fans to be educated about patience in football making reference to both Mosimane and Stuart Baxter.
“So in fact, the challenge that we have as clubs in this country is that we need to educate our supporters. Much as we understand that football is an emotive game with people getting very emotional and impatient sometimes people have to understand. This is why I am making an example with Pitso because not so long ago he was pelted with all sorts of missiles and they said that he is doing the team no good but today he is on top of the league and has already won one trophy already. People don’t become rational when they become emotional.
“Some of you will remember that when we brought Stuart we were under a lot of pressure because people were questioning us saying we are crazy, why are we bringing this guy when failed with Bafana Bafana and so forth. When he lost his first game against Sundowns (Chiefs lost 4-1 in the MTN8 quarter-final on 5/8/12) it even became worse so I think it is not wise to react based on the basis of what people are saying but rather to be responsible and do things in a responsible manner,” reasons Motaung.
