Orlando Pirates coach Tinkler hopes Soweto Derby with Kaizer Chiefs doesn't decide his future

Tinkler lost this blockbuster fixture against Kaizer Chiefs in his first game in charge in December, and is back again on the bench this Saturday for a second attempt at winning the most high-profile match on the domestic calendar.

With the Derby also standing as the only match that attracts 90 000 fans to FNB Stadium it is natural that plenty of supporters will evaluate Tinkler’s coaching credentials based on this game.

“I will hope not,” responds Tinkler when asked if he thinks this fixture will give weight to determining if he will stay on as head coach next season.

“I will hope that my work in its totality is what will determine that and just not because I won the Derby. It is like we said before, the Derby is an important game that gives bragging rights to the fans but it is not the end of the world. Life still continues after the Derby and unfortunately in a derby there has to be a winner and a loser.

“Hopefully, I come out in the winning end and whether it determines my future, I don’t really think about that to be honest. I focus more on ensuring that we, as a team get the desired results in our next game which this weekend happens to be the Derby, that is just the way I think,” reasons Tinkler.

The former Bafana Bafana midfielder is in charge of Bucs until the end of the season.
