Saddam Maake urges football fans to show respect, regardless of the result

Maake, whose side lost their Derby encounter 3-1 last weekend, feels some supporters will only have revenge on their mind come the Soweto giants’ Telkom Knockout clash this Saturday, yet warns that many may not be the case.

''We have to give the coach a chance,” he says. “We don't have to press the panic button yet. I know it hurts to lose against our arch rivals, but let's accept if we lose again on Saturday - let's not throw missiles or whatever at the coach or referee.

“If you are not happy, go to your branch chairman with your complaints … put them in a right manner. Every time when the derby finishes I see people fighting outside the stadium. We don't want to see that this coming Saturday, soccer must be the winner.

“Let's promote the spirit of fair play. Both Chiefs and Pirates must come together … think about those who brings their wives and children to the stadium, some of them travel from as far as Cape Town to watch the Soweto Derby. Let's learn from the supporters of the mini derby [Mamelodi Sundowns v SuperSport United], they don't kill each other after the match."

Maake also urge the fans to respect the coaches and to watch the game in good spirit.

"Maybe it's a South African thing, but on Saturday I was with the Orlando Pirates supporters outside the stadium, they said to me, ‘Saddam, we want nothing but a win today. If our coach Eric Tinkler loses today, we will make sure he goes.’

“And I said, ‘No guys, that's no way to solve a problem.’ Even now I'm wondering what would have happened if Pirates lost on Saturday.

"So I appeal to anyone who is coming to the stadium on Saturday: please let's do what we are supposed to do as supporters, to support our clubs."
