Siphiwe Tshabalala backs Kaizer Chiefs to defend league title ahead of Soweto Derby with Pirates

Chiefs have fallen eight points off the pace in the league marathon raising concerns that this championship will not be staying on at Naturena.

“The situation that we are in currently is temporary and can only be improved on so that we get better from it,” says Shabba whose only concern is a lack of consistency.

That defeat against Platinum Stars this past weekend while Mamelodi Sundowns and Bidvest Wits diluted the hopes of their fans in this league race which is being overseen by Steve Komphela in his first year as head coach at the club.

“We, as players, have been in this situation before so we know what to do and what is expected of us. Like I said before this is our journey and there will always be obstacles but we have the quality to overcome anything that comes our way. I believe we are still in it (championship) and we have a league to defend and there is the Nedbank at stake and Africa (CAF Champions League).

“We have the quality in the team and we have the quality in coach Steve Komphela so what has been missing this season is that we have not been consistent. This year we have played three games all of which I believe we did well, we played a goalless draw against Sundowns creating a lot of chances but sadly we couldn’t convert. Then we travelled to Bloemfontein where we played very well creating good goal-scoring chances and we won the game. The previous game (against Platinum Stars) is no different to both games that I made reference to so I think for us it is to go forward and try to be consistent but apart from playing we are doing well and I think we can only get better from here,” he says.

Shabba adds that they are sufficiently prepared to inflict further misery on Pirates.

“Coming to this game we are prepared and everyone is working very hard because as I am speaking now the coach has a headache, a good one though, as to who to select for the game but all is well. We are all looking forward to a game that I am anticipating will be a great game of football,” adds Tshabalala.
