Steve Komphela on coaches getting sacked

This morning saw yet another casualty with news that University of Pretoria had shown Sammy Troughton the exit door just a day after SuperSport United sacked Gordon Igesund

Himself not comfortable in his job, Komphela is applying a sober mind to the situation, but at the same time making it known how much instability the changing of coaches brings to a team.

“I don’t want to say it is not fair, but it is the reality,” he says. “Maybe one thing that one could do is look at the positives. To say draw inspiration from that, let that inspire you to work harder and accept the fact that it could happen anytime to anybody.

“Maybe also analysing the game. Football has gone away from being recreational … it is business. If you see Chelsea, with Mourinho having won so many things, at some stage taking a decision to say ‘wait a minute, let’s find a replacement’, it means that in as much as they are comfortable with him with his previous success, pointers say we need to do some business.

“So it is a reality but just unfortunate that our colleagues are losing their jobs.

“It could happen to anybody; it’s not something very nice to see because the more coaches we change the more you become unstable.

“So also not trying to give a hint to the bosses to keep us longer, but when you change a coach it is like changing the team … there is instability. But it’s okay, it is part of life and we move on.”

A day after Chiefs supremo Kaizer Motaung made it known that he is sticking with Komphela – regardless of sentiments from the public –the former Bafana Bafana skipper feels the need to return the favour.

“We have never suspected what is said by our principals because we have the utmost trust and confidence in their capabilities and they have taken these decisions and have always given us maximum support.

“Now when it comes to the public understanding, where we are standing it is obviously put in the background or at the back of something.

“There is a lot of hard work going on into teams. Maybe what we see on Saturday and Sunday is the final product, but there is a lot going on and they know how hard we work and we appreciate that, and we hope we would also give back in the sense that when they give you the confidence and support then get the results.”
