Steve Komphela's wit and wisdom as Chiefs-Pirates Derby looms

Komphela has charmed many but has not yet convinced some due to absence of silverware at Naturena since his appointment in the off-season.

Chiefs have reached the Final of the MTN8 Cup, are in the semi-finals of the Telkom KnockOut and are just two points behind the leaders at the quarter-mark of the League season.

Chiefs remain unbeaten in the league and – by way of numbers – have the best defence and the second-best attack. Still, not all who refer to themselves as ‘Khosi for life’ have embraced Komphela as a coach that can continue with the work done by Stuart Baxter during his three years with the club.

Some still have issues with Komphela. But why?

“I don’t know because I am a bit uncomfortable to point at positives because in leadership your job is to be excited when there is a crisis so that you can manage it but when everything else goes well you take a back seat and start thinking again properly,” reasons Komphela, seemingly relaxed just 48 hours ahead of his first Soweto Derby as a coach.

Victory over Orlando Pirates could actually put Kaizer Chiefs back on top of the Absa Premiership; but still some see fit to judge Komphela.

“We are the only team that has conceded as little as four goals, so defensively we are still okay; the threat yes is there and we have to deal with it. Then with scoring, we have scored 12, one of the highest-scoring teams … but still there will be that element of ‘but nothing is happening’.

“It depends on perspective which you cannot change,” he says matter of factly.

Then he drops one of those lines that can only come from the mouth of Komphela: “Sometimes if it is covered in a particular wrap irrespective of the contents it can never be.”

When you read and re-read this last quote, you may or may not decide how some are judged...
