Growing from strength to strength

Downs' elite status in the women's game in the continent has now earned them deserved success commercially as well. We're now beginning to see their game become increasingly visible in mainstream media.

Although the progress is relatively slow, there have been some encouraging signs of action towards growing women's football in Africa. In November 2021, CAF announced that all teams participating in all their club competitions must have a women's side, or else they will not be allowed to compete in any of their tournaments in the 2022-2023 season.

The Downs impact

Repping the Mzansi flag high, the Pretoria outfit is now the most prominent in its region and the number of resources invested in the side is beginning to yield results.

Their partnership with PUMA and Hyundai among other sponsors has helped improve their visibility and we can imagine that most aspiring young women are now seeing that their faces can be on sports apparel ads and other football-related marketing content as well.

Did you know?

Sundowns Ladies won the inaugural CAF Women's Champions League without losing a single game!

Your thoughts, please?

With Sundowns now miles ahead of Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs in this regard, do you think the two Soweto giants can catch up to Masandawana in the women's game?
