Barker reveals master-plan behind shock win over Downs

Head coach Steve Barker has revealed the master plan behind his Stellenbosch side's shock win over Mamelodi Sundowns in a Nedbank Cup quarter-final clash at Athlone Stadium Saturday.

Stellies stunned Sundowns with a 2-1 victory to send the defending champions crashing out of the cup competition.

It is also the Brazilians' first defeat in 24 games in all competitions and a maiden loss for head coach Rulani Mokwena since taking over coaching reigns at Chloorkop.

"My actual message at half-time was that we are doing well," Barker said.

"I thought our back four was very good. I thought a player like Mthethwa was superb in the first half.

"I just felt in transition moments the key was not forcing the play, sometimes we try to play through the pass and then maybe go around and over them was a better option and at the end of the day.

"The reason why we are here and the message before the game was, we need to fight for the badge of this football club.

"We need to fight for each other, we have to fight for our families and friends. We have to fight for the supporters of this club.

"Also, we have to play in a way that we want to honour Oshwin in this Nedbank cup run, and that was just a reminder that we are still in this game if we continue to play and work hard like in the first half.

"If we can get something back in the first 15 to 20 and then we have the opportunity to go and win the game," said Barker.

Stellies have since been drawn against Sekhukhune United in the Nedbank Cup semi-finals. Sekhukhune beat Chippa United 2-1 to progress to the semi-finals of the Ke Yona Cup.
