Matete: 'I've been offered muti'

In this edition of My Muti Story former Baroka FC winger Tshepo "Skhwama" Matete reveals how those close to him have tried to convince him to resort to muti in order to secure contracts with PSL clubs.

Despite his unmatched dribbling skills Matete often finds it difficult to settle in one club for a longer period.

Matete is currently clubless but remains hopeful of finding employment soon.

"You know grootman I'd be lying to you unless the clubs I played for used it behind our backs," Matete tells KickOff.

"At Baroka we used to go to church, even at home my parents were church people.

"So I'm still living with that mentality that I will not do something I'm not familiar with.

"If things are not going well in my life, I just take them as a setback that's all, life goes on, that's who I am I take things as they come.

"People usually try to tell me, 'Hey ndoda yini kwangathi uphila kuphela awuziqinisi?'

"But the thing is I'm not someone who has relatives in villages and so on, my whole family is here in Jozi so I'm not used to those things.

"If I wanted to use muti I could have done that a long time ago from the day I signed my first professional contract at Baroka.

"Because that time lot of people offered to help me with muti saying 'Hey man people from that part of the country are using muti, So you need to be strong otherwise things will not go well for you.'

"But I chose not to entertain any of their advice because I just didn't believe in those things.

"Since I was young, I have never even worn Isiphandla (traditional wristband made out of goat skin).

"Yes, if it was something that was proposed by one of the clubs, I have played for I don't think I would have gone against it because it would have been a collective thing.

"But yes, people do approach me and try to convince me, but since I'm stubborn I turn their offers down.

"Mostly this advice comes from random people, it's not like they are from family members.

"But I always tell them if something comes up it will be because of my talent, not muti.

"I believe in my abilities; hence you've never heard stories of ill-discipline about Skhwama or Skhwama drinking...I just go with the flow as I respect what I do."
