Message to Rayners: ‘Five goals is a licence to a bigger contract’

The last man to score five goals in one league match prior to Iqraam Rayners' incredible achievement over the weekend has told the Stellenbosch forward that this miraculous feat is his licence to an improved contract.

While at Moroka Swallows, James Chamanga struck five past Wayne Sandilands of Platinum Stars at Germiston Stadium on a sunny Sunday afternoon in December 2007.

Chamanga went on to finish as the league's top scorer for that season with 14 goals despite only playing two thirds of the league games as he had to then leave for the Chinese Super League.

"Someone sent a message while we were playing that someone had finally matched my record of five goals in one game," Chamanga tells KICKOFF.

"You should have seen the joy on my face upon hearing that because this is what I have been hoping for since 2007.

"You obviously know I'm the kind of guy that doesn't want to hold on to things alone.

"Even right now, I wish another group of players wins the AFCON just like we did in 2012.

"My heart has so much joy hearing that my name is being remembered for the good I did because another player has scored five goals like I did.

"I wish I was there to shake his hand for what he has done.

"I hope that he is going to be celebrated the same way that I have been celebrated through the years.

"The beauty about these five goals is that they will open new opportunities for him like an improved contract or a move to another club.

"In my case, it changed my belief about my career and that I can become someone better.

"I went to Europe for trials in Russia and Norway and then left for better things in China that same season.

"Those five goals opened doors for me and my family so I'm sure it will be the same for him (Rayners).

"I can tell you right now that this guy is going to Europe for trials or will be taken by a club that will give him a better contract.

"Five goals is a call-up to Europe for any player regardless of the league where those five goals were scored.

"To score five goals is a miracle but we must give thanks to the Almighty when it happens.

"It is never anybody's plan to score five goals in one match because the mission is to win the game for the team.

"Five goals in one match against fellow professionals with families is God given and a miracle.

"I never scored five again in one match since that game in 2007 so that should give you an idea about why I say it was a miracle.

"It will last forever for him as well because it is not easy to repeat such in your career.

"Even at training or against an amateur team you will rarely score five goals so he must cherish this.

Chamanga also confirmed that he is finally hanging his boots upon the expiry of his contract in June next year.

Now 44, Chamanga is doing duty for Zambian champions Red Arrows.

"Once my contract expires next year, then I'm retiring," he discloses.

"I'm glad my last season will come with the team playing in the Champions League concerns.

"There is no better way to finish a career than while at the top so that you leave lasting memories," says Chamanga.
