'He should win the Young Player of the Season'

Head coach Steve Barker has explained why he believes Stellenbosch FC rising star Devin Titus should be named the DStv Premiership Young Player of the Season.

Titus scored the match winner as Stellies collected all three points against struggling Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Tuesday evening with a 1-0 victory to extend their unbeaten run to 19 matches across all competitions.

For Titus, the goal was the 10th of the season from 28 appearances in what has been a stand-out breakthrough season for the 22-year-old.

Speaking to media after the match, Barker said he believes the midfielder is far ahead of any young player in the DStv Premiership.

"We are a humble club and the less said, the better in my opinion. We go about our business a bit under the radar," Barker revealed.

"I just look at a player like Devin Titus, for example, I again have a fear that if you look at his assists and goal scored, he should win the Young Player of the Season if it was tomorrow by a country mile.

"Whether that will happen, I don't know, but I do feel it's those types of instances where maybe not enough has been said about some of the achievements of what our players and what we are doing as a team.

"But we are not out there to buy people and make them see what we are doing by telling them, we just go by business the way we do. I do believe that we'll get the credit and reward that we deserve."

The Winelands outfit will be aiming to continue their unbeaten streak when they take on Sekhukhune United on Saturday. Kick-off is at 17:00.
