'Stellies also have a Bomb Squad like the Springboks'

Stellenbosch head coach Steve Barker says they have their own version of the 'Bomb Squad' after the impact made by his substitutes in the Carling Knockout.

Stellies beat TS Galaxy 5-4 on penalties to lift the Carling Knockout trophy after a 1-1 draw in extra-time in the final.

After going to the break trailing, Barker made attacking changes early in the second stanza, Antonio Van Wyk, Andre De Jong and Mervin Boji, who changed the complexion of the game.

"I thought of late we've also got a similar thing to the Springboks, the bomb squad, so players have been coming on and changing games, bringing the energy," Barker explained.

"I thought we were lacking a bit of energy and spark, we needed something and I thought Andre, Antonio, Mervin Boji that's exactly what they gave us when they came on, especially Antonio, he was taking people on and getting behind."

Matsheke, who spent the whole of last season without a club after he was released by Chiefs, was recruited by Stellies early this season as a replacement for Sibongiseni Mthethwa, who was signed by Amakhosi.

The 24-year-old, who has been in-form for Stellies came on at the beginning of extra-time and scored the winning penalty for the Cape Winelands side.

"Darrel Matsheke was club-less, he was released from Kaizer Chiefs, he was training at Casric trying to earn himself a contract. He has come to us, he has been absolutely superb and I'm just really proud of him to score the winning goal for us," Barker added..
