Barker: Stellies were the better team with 10 men

Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker felt his side were still better the side after being reduced to ten men.

Stellies lost their second consecutive game after Pule Mmodi broke the deadlock for Chiefs early in the second stanza and Barker's men were reduced to ten men a couple of minutes later after Devin Titus was sent off. Christian Saile secured the three points for Amakhosi with the second goal in the last minute.

Barker says they dominated the game but were undone by a moment of brilliance from Mmodi and a subsequent red card to Titus.

"The first-half, the first ten minutes I knew it would be a bit of a chaos and I knew that if we see out the first 15 minutes we would then get control of the game which we did," Barker said on SuperSport TV.

"I felt that the remainder of the first-half after the first ten minutes we absolutely dominated, we created the better chances, we pegged them in their half, there was no threat whatsoever from Chiefs in the first-half.

"Second-half, we came out again, I thought it was a similar pattern where we were the better team but what you can't always cater for is the moment of brilliance, their first goal you know top quality," he said.

"The other thing you can't always cater for is when you get a red-card. I haven't had the privilege of seeing it but I thought the first yellow card was very harsh and even maybe the second."

Barker went on and said that they continued to dominate the game even playing with ten men and complained that it is the third time in a row they had to finish the game with a man down against Chiefs and he would like to finish with a complete set of players against the Glamour Boys.

"So when you then go down from a moment of brilliance and you're down to ten men we were still the better team, we still asked the questions, we still attacked them, we still tried to sort of get back into the game," he said.

"Obviously they would have transition moments but we played this game and we played the way we did we win it more than we don't, so we didn't come out in the right end of the scoreline but once again the effort, the commitment from the players, the chances created ,the way we played with the bravery and the courage , for me we were the better team throughout the 90 minutes.

"Hopefully one day we can finish with 11 players against Chiefs. It's now three games on the bounce that we have not been able to, so ja it always makes it difficult when that happens, so congratulations to them for getting the points but ja I'm a little bit disappointed, not in the performance but in the result," he said.
