SuperSport United assistant coach Andre Arendse has explained how they gave away the game after they restricted Mamelodi Sundowns in the first stanza on Tuesday evening.
SuperSport held their own in the first stanza, after the sides went to break deadlocked. However, Sundowns struck just after the hour-mark, through Iqraam Rayners and Lucas Ribeiro Costa made it 2-0 just moments later.
Arendse, who was in charge on the bench, due to head coach Gavin Hunt's suspension, says they gave the Brazilians too much possession in the second stanza and that's how they got hurt.
"You know when you don't have possession of the ball it's very difficult and Sundowns is a team that likes possession of the ball and sometimes when you give them too much of it, they can hurt you," Arendse said on SuperSport TV.
"I thought our structure was really good in the first-half, as a unit I think we were very good. There were times where Sundowns moved us out of possession, especially in the first-half and then one or two individual errors.
"When you give a team like Sundowns that in the game they will hurt you and unfortunately that's what happened tonight."
Matsatsantsa had new faces in the line-up such as Keanin Ayer Boya, Nokutenda Mangezi, Vincent Pule and Nyiko Mobbie.
But the former Bafana Bafana shot-stopper singled out Mobbie as one of the new players who impressed.
"I thought Nyiko Mobbie was fantastic for us, we use more as a wing-back, I thought he combined his defensive and attacking duties very well," Arendse said.
"So this game is always a big test especially for new players coming and I thought they didn't disappoint. I feel for the players because they really worked their socks off over the 90 minutes," Arendse added.
