SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt has defended his decision to play Thamsanqa Gabuza as a makeshift centre-back in their shock Nedbank Cup defeat to minnows Dondol Stars.

SuperSport crashed out of the cup competition following a 2-1 defeat to the ABC Motsepe League side at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday.

Alongside his surprise Gabuza selection, Hunt called up Neo Rapoo, Thalente Mbatha and Bilal Baloyi for Wednesday's clash.

"We gave people a chance tonight, as we have players out under different circumstances, so we had to make changes," Hunt said post-match.

"We have a long season.

"Still, we had the players out there that should have been enough to win the game given our chances.

"We've got Tyson out, but I don't want to go there, it shouldn't be an excuse.

"We should be good enough to win the game, we had enough opportunities, and we didn't take them.

Hunt insisted that he would make exactly the same selection if given the chance.

"You've got to try to play the situation, and we tried to do the right thing.

"Would I do it again, I'd do exactly the same thing. We have to look after the longevity of the team for the future and players were given a chance.

"I must take the rap, but you've got to believe that players are good enough."
