'It didn't end the way I wanted it to...' - Lakay opens up on Downs exit

Experienced defender Lyle Lakay has shed some light on his exit from Mamelodi Sundowns and rediscovering his impressive form at SuperSport United.

Lakay was voted the 2021/22 DStv Premiership Defender of the Season after a standout campaign where he contributed nine assists and four goals to help the Brazilians win the league title, MTN8 and the Nedbank Cup.

It came as a surprise then when it emerged that Lakay was to be loaned to Cape Town City, while Sundowns would purchase Terrence Mashego from the Citizens.

The left-back then spent an underwhelming spell in Cape Town, before returning to Gauteng to be in SuperSport colours. Since his return, Lakay has gradually shown glimpses of his former brilliance.

In the current campaign, the 32-year-old has registered five assists and four goals in 24 appearances. That's a higher goal contribution rate than any other defender in the league.

"It didn't end the way I wanted it to," Lakay told journalists at a recent SuperSport and Huawei collaboration event.

"But that's life, you know, it happens everywhere. But I made peace with it, I've moved on. I'm at SuperSport now. We are past the halfway stage of the season and I believe if I didn't make peace with it, I wouldn't have been in the situation that I am now in terms of the performances, the goals and the assists and all that.

"I'm enjoying it, I think the last few weeks or the last month, if I look at my performance... Not that I want to speak about myself, I'm not one to speak about myself, but yeah. I think it was about four or five games in a row that I've contributed, I think it was two goals and three assists.

"So, so far so good and like I mentioned before, I'm well on track to achieving my goals for the season, which is reaching double figures in goals and assists, and I think I'm on about eight or nine now (goal plus assists contributions) with eight games left, including the Nedbank cup. So, hopefully I can achieve it."

Lakay will get his next chance to improve on his tally when SuperSport take on Lamontville Golden Arrows on Wednesday.
