Johnson: How Morocco did it

Former assistant coach at North African giants Al Ahly Cavin Johnson has warned Morocco on what they must guard against in their next fixture.

After knocking Spain out of the 2022 FIFA World Cup currently taking place in Qatar, the Africans will now face Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal in the semi-final.

Johnson says Portugal will be a lot tougher than the Spaniards.

"I'm always excited for African teams," Johnson tells KickOff.

"I think it's because of the mentality, also understand that 70 percent of the Moroccan team plays in Europe and they grown up in Europe.

"The support from the Moroccan people was very important yesterday.

"They defended very well against Spain, I mean you can take nothing away from their defense.

"Spain couldn't find a way through the defense of Morocco. And after 70 minutes Morocco tells themselves, listen guys, these people are technically better than us, So we defend and try to catch them on the break, if we can't then we go for penalties.

"People say the penalties it's the luck of a draw or the luck of the kicker, but when you look at the takers of the penalties and the body language of the goalkeepers, the body language of the Moroccan goalkeeper was 100 percent good.

"The Moroccan kickers they took good penalties, the Spaniards kickers they didn't take good penalties so maybe they didn't emphasize penalties they thought they would go through before they even reach the penalties.

"I'm happy for the Moroccans and I'm happy to be an African.

"And I was also happy to see one of my previous players Badr Benoun come on the pitch as well, he played for Ahly, I wasn't happy that he missed a penalty but I know he normally scores penalties.

"The way they played last night against Spain I think they stand a good chance of going to the Semis, but they have to be careful because the Portuguese are playing harder, they fight.

"They don't play calm football like the Spaniards. They are led by Pepe and he's a real deal fighter. Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes are also fighters.

"They can be ball players and fighters at the same time. The physicality of the Portuguese is something that the Spaniards don't show a lot of.

"It's going to be a nice physical game, and I hope the Moroccans comes out tops."
