In this edition of Locker Room Secrets, KickOff catches up with former SuperSport United, Maritzburg United, and Thanda Royal Zulu player Japie Motale.
Motale shares the change room secrets from some of the Premier Soccer League clubs he played for.
Who was always late?
"At Thanda Royal Zulu it was Scara Ngobese. That one he was always late. And his reasons were always the same: the traffic, that's what he always told the coach."
Any interesting rituals before they played?
"To be honest, in all the clubs I played for, I don't remember anyone doing such."
Who was the jokester?
"The likes of Katlego Loke were the ones talking a lot."
Which of the PSL teams you played for believed in muti the most?
"I was very fortunate because of the teams I played for. They were white-owned teams. So, such things were never done.
"Like at Maritzburg United, the team was owned by Indians, so there was no time for muti even there.
"Thanda Royal Zulu and SuperSport United were all white-owned teams. At Moroka Swallows, and yes, that's where I experienced muti."
Who was the singer?
"At SuperSport United, Patrick Mayo, he was always singing."
Who was the best dressed and the worst dressed?
"There were quite a few who dressed well, like Themba Mnguni at SuperSport United, and at Thanda Royal Zulu, it was the late Scara Ngobese.
"But the likes of Serge Djiehoua I wouldn't even say they were the worst dressed because what they used to wear was their tradition."
Who never showered?
"At Maritzburg United, we never showered because we were staying five minutes away from where we were training at Harry Gwala Stadium.
Rate the coach's team talk:
"I think Pitso Mosimane was the best for me, he gave proper analysis during his team talks.
"I must not forget Boebie Solomons at Maritzburg United, he taught me a lot about football."
