Lakay: I left Downs for free

SuperSport United's Lyle Lakay has revealed details behind his departure from Mamelodi Sundowns.

Lakay joined SuperSport on August 18 after signing a two-year deal with Matsatsantsa. The 32-year-old defender spent six years with the Premiership champions, after securing a big-money move from Cape Town City during the 2018/19 season.

The defender was named PSL Defender of the Season after winning five league titles with the Chloorkop-based side and prior to his return to the Citizens on loan.

Lakay was on the wanted list of AmaZulu before joining SuperSport United where has reunited with his former coach, Gavin Hunt.

"I don't think people know that I came to SuperSport United free", Lakay tells KickOff.

"People probably thought because of the business that SuperSport United and Mamelodi Sundowns have, people think that there was agreement. No, I came here on a free transfer. I had a mutual agreement with Sundowns to terminate (my contract)  and I came to SuperSport (as a free agent)", he added.

Hunt has confirmed that Lyle Lakay will play as a midfielder at SuperSport and not as left back where he excelled during his stint with Sundowns.
