'I can't bring another 30-year-old into my club'

An ambitious PSL club has opened up on why they passed up the opportunity of signing two free agents who were recently on the books of Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns respectively.

Matsatsantsa are putting in the final preparations for the upcoming season and with key players like Shandre Campbell and Kegan Johannes having departed for greener pastures, most would think the club would steal at the chance to sign free agents like S'fiso Hlanti, Keagan Dolly and Brian Onyango.

All of the above were recently released by their now former teams.

Hlanti and Onyango had trained with SuperSport for several sessions but were not signed.

However, speaking to media at the club's new sleeve sponsor announcement, the club's CEO, Stan Matthews, explained why he had turned down the option.

"I can't keep bringing in 30-year-olds into the club, and there have been opportunities to sign Hlanti and Onyango, who are very good players," Matthews told journalists.

"Hlanti would add a lot of experience for us at left-back, but I can't bring another 30-year-old into my club,"

"I'm going to bring 24-year-old to 28-year-old players who have a great re-sell value to whoever offers me the best deal and who can stay with the club if needs be and still be in the prime of their career, not up-and-coming and not over the hill either.

"That's where we found ourselves over the years in re-calibrating our club."

The Sturrock Park-based outfit also recently parted ways with another former Chiefs man in Phathutshedzo Nange.

Meanwhile, the club has welcomed Nyiko Mobbie from Mamelodi Sundowns on a permanent transfer, while Ricardo Goss returns for another season-long loan spell.
