Akpeyi looks ahead to 'emotional' Chiefs meeting

Moroka Swallows goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has opened up about the prospect of facing former side Kaizer Chiefs as the two teams prepare for their Soweto derby clash on Sunday.

The Dube Birds go into Sunday's encounter somewhat on the front foot, having won three of their last five DStv premiership matches and are undefeated since mid-September.

In the opposite half of the field will be an Amakhosi team yet to find their footing this season. Chiefs languish in 12th place with three defeats from their last five league matches and just wins from 12 league outings.

Despite Chiefs' poor form, Akpeyi believes his former side's struggles make them an even more dangerous opponent.

"I think playing a team that is struggling a bit is a difficult one to play," Akpeyi said at Swallows' media day on Thursday.

"It's not going to be an easy one on Sunday because they (Chiefs) are looking for points everywhere and we are looking to sustain our position on the log table.

"So, it's going to be a difficult one. This is going to be case of two lions fighting at the end of the day, but we are already expecting what's to come on that day and we are prepared for it."

The Nigerian shot stopper spent two seasons with Amakhosi from 2019 to 2022 before joining the Dube Birds and insist his eyes will be on collecting all three points when he meets his former camp.

"It will be regular feeling as when you have to play against any PSL team because the first objective is to go grab three points and stay on top (above Chiefs) in the league, like where we are in the moment.

"But it's going to be a bit emotional because you're playing against a team that, in your career, put you on top of the ladder, so I think that will be it. Most importantly is the three points."

The match will be played at Dobsonville Stadium. Kick-off is at 15:30.
