How I Became a Goalkeeper: Edgard da Silva

In our exciting feature How I Became a Goalkeeper, KickOff speaks to former Silver Stars and Moroka Swallows goalkeeper coach Edgard da Silva.

The Brazilian-born Da Silva played as a goalkeeper for the likes of Sharp Blackpool back in the day.

"I started playing football when I was nine years old.

"I became a goalkeeper while I was 11 years old in Brazil. Before that, I used to be a left-winger because I was a left-footer.

"When our new coach came he realised our goalkeeper was not around and he decided to put me in goals.

"And by the age of 17, I was already in the first team and I already had a professional contract with a second-division team."

Who are some of the goalkeepers you looked up to?

"Claudio Taffarel. What a great goalkeeper. Legend of the Brazil national team.

"He was very clever, had very good organisational skills, he positioned himself very well, his ball distribution was unbelievable. He had lots of qualities.

"To be a good goalkeeper you need to add on your talent, you need to practice you know."

Who are some of the goalkeepers today who are your favourites?

"I used to like Itumeleng Khune very much but he just let himself down by not training hard. We can see that.

"But now, Ronwen Williams is improving a lot. I'm sure he is working very hard at Mamelodi Sundowns with a very good goalkeeper coach.

"He is the goalkeeper I like very much at the moment."
