In our exciting feature, How I Became a Goalkeeper, former Moroka Swallows, Highlands Park, and Lobi Stars goalkeeper Greg Etafia reveals the interesting story of how he ended up between the sticks.
The current TS Galaxy goalkeeping coach reveals how at the age of 12, back in his homeland of Nigeria.
"Like it usually happens in our childhood, you are busy playing inside dribbling other kids, and all of a sudden you are told to go and stand in goals. That is how it usually starts.
"I just went to stand in goals and started enjoying it. I was playing inside for my elder brother's team; our street was playing against that street and so on.
"So, every time I was tired of chasing the ball, I would go to the goals to get a rest.
"While in goals I started making saves and diving, I was starting to enjoy doing all that more than playing inside.
"After that people started telling me I'm very good in goals and I can improve there and there. That's how I became a goalkeeper."
"Back home we used to have a lot of goalkeepers. I can count my mentor Emmanuel Babayaro, the elder brother of Celestine Babayaro as an inspiration.
"There was also Peter Rufai, there were a lot of goalkeepers from Nigeria playing in Europe that time."
Who are some of the goalkeepers today who are your favourites?
"All the goalkeepers who are playing in the PSL today are my favourites.
"As a goalkeeper coach, I respect every goalkeeper that is in the PSL you know.
"We have a lot of good goalkeepers here on the PSL you know.
"Right now, I'm also happy for Daniel Akpeyi, he's been doing very, very well you know."
