How Komphela's relationship with Swallows bosses turned sour

Former Moroka Swallows head coach Steve Komphela is not one to lose a dressing room but how did he lose trust with the Swallows management?

Swallows were conspicuously silent in late December last year on their situation with Komphela amidst the contract saga with the players after they could not honour fixtures against Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows.

The Birds terminated the contracts of all players for participating in what they deemed "an illegal strike" and they communicated the matter to the media but nothing was said about the former Sundowns coach.

It emerged in January when the team resumed training for the second round of the season that the former Kaizer Chiefs coach was not conducting training sessions and was nowhere to be seen at Dobsonville Stadium.

Komphela revealed then to SABC Sport that he was in the dark with the developments at Swallows and that Team Manager Elasto Kapowezha, was running the show without informing him of what is happening.

Komphela has now revealed that his relationship with the Soweto giants' management turned sour after he went public with the struggles of players not being paid their salaries.

The veteran tactician broke the news to the media after their 2-1 loss to SuperSport United that the players had not trained for 15 days prior to that game in December due to owed salaries.

"The supporters said Steve must go and I said to the coaches, 'Do you hear that? And they are right because with six minutes to go before the end of the match and you lose like that' (Swallows conceded two goals from behind in the last six minutes)," Komphela said on 947's MSW.

"Unfortunately they did not know that we did not train for 15 days, which then led to the post-match press conference at Dobsonville where I had to speak the truth.

"Sometimes when you have to speak the truth, the truth hurts. I must have an extremely high level of confidentiality but fact remains, there are moments when everything is known and you can't be beating around the bush, you have to speak the truth," he added.

Komphela officially parted ways with Swallows this week and has been linked with a move to Golden Arrows, as reported by KickOff.
