My Welcome to the League Moment: Sisa Nombe

In our exciting feature, My Welcome to the League Moment, KickOff catches up with former Moroka Swallows star Sisa Nombe.

Nombe says he will never forget his first-ever match in the top tier where a 10-minute cameo felt like an hour.

"I remember very well I was at Moroka Swallows, and we were up against Wits University at Milpark Stadium," Nombe tells KickOff.

"That was my first game in the top tier, and I think I played about 10 minutes.

"The last 10 minutes of the game, that is. But believe me, that felt like an hour.

"The pace killed me, man. You know it is so simple when you are watching it on television.

"I'm telling you, it's not the same once you are in there (laughs).

"I gave my all in that 10 minutes, but going to the dressing room after the final whistle, I couldn't walk, I was cramping.

"When I got in their dressing room, I just sat down on the floor and stretched my muscles.

"Those days, Wits still had the likes of Kevin Rafferty, Conrad Barnard, Gary Macnab, and Ashley Makhanya was also there.

"Coming from Kasi, everything seemed new to me, it was difficult to adjust. It was tough man, those white guys from Wits were stubborn. I remember we drew 0-0.

"They were playing direct football, and the ball was always on air, and they were taller.

"So, most of the time, I found myself chasing, and it was an away game.

"I remember one of my teammates Phumlani Dindi saying to me during the match, relax boy, you will get used to it.

"Our coach was Walter Rautman, and he said to me, these are your type of games, you will fit here, you will see, don't panic, just put the ball down and play your normal game (laughs).

"What that game taught me was discipline and the importance of workrate.

"It taught me how important work rate is in this game. It requires a lot of fitness."
