Swallows: We are not Dube Birds

In this edition of Story Behind The Nickname Swallows FC Ceo Sipho Xulu explains how the club ended up being mistakenly known as The Dube Birds.

According to Xulu who is currently Swallows longest serving official, the club's rightful nickname is simply "The Birds".

"This Dube Birds nickname is actually not our nickname," Xulu tells KickOff.

"It only became known as our nickname because of the current generation.

"It was in 1962 if I'm not mistaken when some of the people at Moroka Swallows decided to form their own team.

"The other group called themselves The Babes while the second group called themselves Big XV.

"We've been always known as 'Up The Birds'. Both teams came from the Moroka Swallows that has always used the slogan 'Up The Birds'.

"Swallows Big XV was registered and it became Swallows Ltd, hence the slogan 'Don't Follow Me Follow The Birds'.

"So this thing of Dube Birds was started by some Swallows fan from Dube who had started his own amateur club of young boys that didn't even last long, and named it Dube Birds.

"Now because Swallows used to hang out and train at Dube Station, people started calling us the Dube Birds.

"So I can say this without fear that originally Dube Birds was never Moroka Swallows' nickname.

"Our correct nickname is The Birds. This Dube Birds only became popular now-now."
