Where Are They Now: Shaun Haschick

In this week's edition of Where Are They Now, former Moroka Swallows striker Shaun Haschick takes KickOff on a trip back to his playing days, as well as talks about why he quit and life after football.

The 42-year-old former former South Africa U23 international is now a successful businessman in the Eastern Cape.

Who am I?

"I was born in Port Elizabeth [now called Gqeberha], raised in East London, and my professional debut was at Bush Bucks FC. That was in 2001.

"I then moved to play in Cyprus for Apollon Limassol. I managed to play for the national team from the U14 to the U23s.

"I have a Nedbank Cup medal I won with Swallows in 2009 and then the 2010 runners-up medal against Orlando Pirates.

"But my biggest achievement in football was playing in Europe."

My playing days?

"My career was cut short by an injury. I was ambitious, I always wanted to go as far as I could. I do feel I could have left more on the field.

"Injuries ended my career a bit early, otherwise, I could have achieved much more. A hamstring injury forced me into retirement. My businesses are my wife and my child.

"I didn't officially retire, but in 2012 I just decided that life was bigger than football, and I used my BCom degree to build a new life."

Did I make money from soccer?

"It was at the time when there wasn't money in football. When DStv came on board to broadcast the matches, that's when the money started coming in.

"So, I didn't make so much money like some of my compatriots who made money at the bigger teams.

"I would have been a bit smarter when managing my money. As footballers, you only think about this season and next season.

"You never think that you can get injured and that your career can come to an end. You're just kinda living in the moment. You are not considering the future."

Where I'm living?

"I'm currently at home in East London, where I have my businesses. I'm not married and I don't have any children. My businesses are my children... and my dog [laughs]."

Jobs since playing the game?

"After football, I started a clothing brand, which I developed and grew from 2012 until COVID, so I moved into the Cafe industry, the coffee business. So, now I own Cafes and mobile coffee vans."

If I could do it again?

"I would have valued and appreciated every single minute a little bit more while on the field.

"I would have the mentality and attitude that I developed as an entrepreneur. I'd put more work into my game. I believe I could have achieved way more in my football career."
