According to a source, the Limpopo-born player is training with the club after a brief playing stint in Malta.
Matombo, the younger brother of ex-Manning Rangers and Amaglug-glug international Nkipitheni, also previously had a spell at Chippa United.
"Chris is back in the country. He is currently training with Leopards," says the informant.
"Indications are that they would sign [him]."
Lidoda Duvha are also assessing Lesotho forward Tumelo Khutlang and an unnamed Cameroonian striker ahead of their campaign in the Absa Premiership in 2018/19.
Leopards, who are confident of gaining PSL approval to keep their home games at Thohoyandou Stadium, gained promotion via the play-offs after finishing as runners-up in the National First Division to Highlands Park.
