The Namibian international parted ways with Baroka FC recently after just one season with the Limpopo outfit and will now become part of Amakhosi’s side.
Vries comes in as a replacement for Brilliant Khuzwayo, who has joined Orlando Pirates. Khuzwayo spent years as an understudy to number one goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune and decided to make a move in search of regular game-time.
Khuzwayo revealed in a radio interview that he asked to at least play the cup matches, but nothing came of his request.
Vries, who started out as a regular at Baroka before dropping to the bench, will know that he has been signed as back-up and will not expect to get regular game-time at Naturena.
“After Brilliant Khuzwayo left, we wanted to get a seasoned goalkeeper to assist Itumeleng Khune,” the club’s football manager Bobby Motaung told the Amakhosi website.
“We have a few talented youngsters like Bruce Bvuma and Brylon Petersen who need to work with experienced keepers. We welcome Virgil.”
Bruce Bvuma is another shot-stopper who will be pushing Khune and Vries in the coming campaign.
