Club spokesperson Thulani Thuswa confirmed that the Bafana Bafana international did not link up with his teammates on Sunday, amid reports he wants to make a move to the English Premier League, where Brighton Hove and Albion have made an offer for his services.
Reports suggest Sundowns have put a heavy price tag on the player. The club released a statement yesterday insisting they remain committed to helping Tau achieve his dream of landing a move to Europe.
“Percy is yet to report to camp, I think it might be today. But it [the situation] is under control,” Thuswa said.
“He was supposed to be there yesterday, but he gave his reasons to the club, he spoke to the team and all is above board. Players can be away from camp if the reason is valid.”
Thuswa added: “I am sure he understands that he is under contract and the club will do whatever it can to make sure that he goes overseas.
“Percy has been with the club for a long time, from a young age. Percy played in the Club World Cup through Sundowns, in the Champions League through Sundowns. When you play in such competitions, you expose a player’s talent to other clubs.
“We are not surprised by the sudden interest in Percy Tau. There’s a lot of interest in our players, but when clubs want to engage Sundowns about our players they know the channels and they must show respect in their approach.”
