Buchanan has been training with the Team of Choice for the past 10 days, and is said to have done enough to earn himself a deal with the Nedbank Cup runners-up.
The 27-year-old playmaker was let go by Amakhosi after an unsuccessful two-year spell at the club, whom he joined from Bloemfontein Celtic in 2016.
With doubts over his injury history, Maritzburg coach Fadlu Davids invited the Cape Town-born former junior international for an assessment to see if he could withstand their pre-season training.
Buchanan has since come through unscathed, while proving his quality in the middle of the park, and a deal is believed to be in the pipeline.
When reached for comment, Maritzburg chairman Farook Kadodia refused to give much away, insisting that official pronouncements would be made at a later stage.
“Our club policy is very simple, we’ll only make our own announcements on players. As far as any players on trial or assessments, the club will not make any statements outside of that,” Kadodia tells snl24.com/kickoff.
Pressed for confirmation on whether former Chiefs winger Edmore Chirambadare has left according to reports, Kadodia responded: “Yes, I can tell you that he’s left.”
