New Kaizer Chiefs coach will decide if Patrick Mabedi is needed on the technical team

Mabedi was assistant to Steve Komphela last season and had to take over as interim coach after the latter resigned following a Nedbank Cup semi-final defeat to Free State Stars at Moses Mabhida Stadium in April.

Chiefs started their pre-season preparations with Mabedi overseeing the training sessions, but it’s unclear if he will be part of the new coach’s technical team.

Should the new coach come with his own assistants, there’s also the option of having Mabedi as a second assistant.

“We don’t know. Some coaches come with their own assistants. It obviously depends on the quality of set-up we’ve got. Some come with their assistants, but we still have Mabedi there. We will keep him as an assistant,” Chiefs football manager Bobby Motaung says.

Motaung has admitted that the search for someone to replace Komphela has been difficult for the club. Another challenge for them is finding someone who will hit the ground running.

Stuart Baxter has been heavily linked with the job at Naturena and is somebody who would not need time to settle in because he knows the environment and the club's expectations.

“You need to make sure you get the right person. Another challenge is that you bring in somebody new who does not even understand the culture. It might take him another year or two [to adapt], so we have to find the balance in terms of who we get, someone who is going to hit the ground running.”
