Philani Zulu determined to win over Steve Komphela's replacement at Kaizer Chiefs

Chiefs are still looking for a replacement for Steve Komphela, who quit in April after a Nedbank Cup semi-final loss to Free State Stars condemned the club to a third straight year without silverware under his watch.

Komphela recruited Zulu from Maritzburg United and fielded the 25-year-old in 28 league games last term.

With Amakhosi yesterday announcing fellow left-backs Tsepo Masilela and Sibusiso Khumalo have been released, Zulu has good odds on building on his solid first season with the Soweto giants.

"It's two fold: it can be good and bad, but it depends on which side you look at it," said Zulu when asked about his personal prospects with a new coach coming in.

"Because the new coach might arrive and like the way you play and how you played this past season if he did watch those games.

"At the same time he may not like the way you played and the way you are.

"So as a player you just have to be prepared for everything and remain positive, because I trust myself with my talent and my football that I can do everything that is needed."

Zulu joined Chiefs after turning down a contract extension offer at Maritzburg, having only made three league appearances in 2016/17. He believes he responds well to challenges.

"I'm someone who likes the challenge and it didn't affect me [the lack of game-time] because I was ready mentally for whatever I'll find. I told myself that I'll face it even if it's tough.

"Also the coach had a hand in allowing me to be free and play the way I play because he was supporting me. The players I found there also supported me."
