Chiefs last week revealed Ntshangase would sport the coveted number, which he also had at former club Black Leopards, this season. The move shows much is expected of the Bafana Bafana international, who is yet to fire since his January signing from Baroka.
Keagan Buchanan was previously handed the number 10 at the Soweto giants but he barely featured in his two years with the club prior to his exit last month.
Other Chiefs players to have worn the number include Fredericks, Mthokozisi Yende, Michael Nkambule, Siyabonga Nkosi and deceased duo John 'Shoes' Moshoeu and Isaac 'Shakes' Kungwane.
The 40-year-old Fredericks, who played for the Glamour Boys from 2001 until 2004, says Ntshangase should not forget what matters most at Naturena.
"Before the number it is the badge ... play for the badge and everything else follows. If you focus on the number it shows you as individually playing for yourself. Football, fortunately or unfortunately, is a team sport, it's not an individual sport.
"So you are person that the team will look to when things are not going right. So you have assumed that responsibility by taking the jersey, but you need to understand that you play for the badge before the number.
"Whoever is playing at Chiefs the stage is there. Whoever is playing for Pirates the stage is there. Whoever plays for Mamelodi Sundowns the stage is there. When you do well consistently for big teams you play for the national team. Playing for the national team you are in the shop window for the world.
"So my message to him, the opportunity is there for you, go out there and get it."
