Chiefs on Monday announced the signing of Namibian shot-stopper Vries as a replacement for Brilliant Khuzwayo, who recently joined Orlando Pirates due to limited game-time.
Vries played 22 games for Baroka in his sole season with Bakgaga last term, having also had spells at Maritzburg United and Golden Arrows.
He was initially brought to the PSL in 2011 by then-Arrows and one-time Chiefs mentor Ernst Middendorp.
While Vries has great admiration for Khune he plans to push the Bafana Bafana international for "the betterment of the club".
"Itumeleng Khune is my hero," Vries told Chiefs' website.
"I have always been following his career. He’s my role model. It’s a great opportunity to work with him.
"We will work hard and push each other for the better of the club.”
The 29-year-old, who is expected to provide cover to Khune, says he is also a great exponent of the half-volley favoured by the Glamour Boys stalwart. Former Amakhosi keeper Rowen Fernandez is credited with showcasing the technique before Khune became known for his adeptness at it.
"Rowen was the first to kick the ball out with a half-volley. But Itu really mastered it," Vries said.
"I am great at doing that half-volley as well, I am breathing down Itu’s neck.
Bruce Bvuma and Brylon Petersen are also options in the sticks for the Soweto giants.
