Toyota Motors South Africa has confirmed two recall campaigns affecting its Yaris, Hilux, Fortuner and Innova models. Around 6.4 million vehicles are said to be affected worldwide.

In the incident affecting Yaris, the seat rail mechanism on certain previous-generation models is affected. As part of the recall, the spring in the mechanism will be replaced to ensure the seat remains in place, Toyota SA senior manager for corporate communications Leo Kok said.

Similarly, pre-facelift versions of Hilux, Fortuner and Innova are subject to recall to replace a faulty spiral cable located between the steering wheel and steering column. Where the cable is damaged, the airbag light will be illuminated, Kok added.

The latest series of recalls is a ‘global, preemptive campaign not related to any specific South African incidences,’ Kok said. ‘Parts are being flown to South Africa at the moment and we will start contacting affected owners as soon as the final vehicle list (outlining the specific affected models) is received.’

Concerned owners are advised to contact their nearest dealer, who would be able to provide additional details once the final vehicle list is available. The planned repairs will not affect vehicle warranties and out-of-warranty vehicles will be repaired free of charge, Kok assured.
