Sacked AFCON head coach set for top job in Europe?

A coach who was sacked at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations is now reportedly close to landing a top job in Europe.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, former Ivory Coast boss Jean-Louis Gasset is now the frontrunner for the soon-to-be vacant Olympique Marseille role.

It is understood the French giants are set to relieve Italian manager Gennaro Gattuso of his duties after four months in charge following a seventh defeat in Ligue 1 this season, when the side lost 1-0 to Brest on Sunday.

Gasset, who was sacked by the Elephants during the 2023 AFCON's group stage only to see them go on to win the tournament under interim manager Emerse Fae, has reportedly been identified as Marseille's main target for the position.

It is further claimed that Gasset's appointment is set to be on a short-term basis, with the Ligue 1 team's hierarchy set to decide on a long-term manager at the end of the season.

The 70-year-old's last job in France came between 2020 and 2021 with Bordeaux, while he also previously had stints at Saint-Etienne and Montpellier.

Gasset has managed 162 Ligue 1 games to date, picking up 61 victories, 35 draws, and 66 defeats, according to Transfermarkt.
