AFCON-winning coach urges CAF to imitate UEFA

An Africa Cup of Nations-winning coach has now urged CAF to imitate UEFA in the way international tournaments are structured.

Emerse Fae guided host nation Ivory Coast to a continental triumph at the AFCON in February this year, but just months after it, he has now shifted his focus to the next continental showpiece set to kick off in December next year.

With CAF having already revealed the groups for the qualifiers, the Elephants were drawn in Group G with Zambia, Sierra Leone and Chad as they look to begin their title defence.

The qualifiers are set to kick off in September this year, but while they will be trying to secure their places for AFCON 2025, which is set to take place in Morocco, African nations will also be competing for a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

As such, Fae has suggested that having what many believe is Africa's showpiece competition on a four-year basis instead would do the world of good for football on the continent.

"It will be good to be as in Europe and South America and play every four years," he told BBC Africa.

"I think it will be easier for the players because they will have fewer games and will maybe be stronger if they play less."

The qualifiers for AFCON 2025 will commence in September and is expected to conclude in November this year.

The first and second-placed teams from each of the 12 groups, excluding Group B where Morocco competes, will earn their spots at the tournament.
