Ghana to hold crunch meeting after Black Stars humiliation

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is reportedly set to hold a crunch meeting after the Black Stars' humiliating failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Ghana headed into their final match of qualifying against Niger on Monday already knowing that their hopes of booking a spot at the next AFCON were over.

To make matters worse, there was no consolation victory for the West African giants as they lost 2-1 to Niger in front of their home crowd in Accra, with the visitors snatching a stoppage-time winner to inflict further misery on Ghana.

After the match, things came to a head between Ghana head coach Otto Addo and some members of the media, as a heated exchange between the manager and a journalist ensued during the post-match press conference.

Clips of the confrontation have since gone viral on X, but Addo maintained that he would not resign from his duties, stating that he wants to continue and attempt to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

However, his future as Ghana boss may no longer be in his hands after their embarrassing AFCON qualifying campaign, in which they suffered three defeats and three draws in six matches.

According to Citi Sports Online, the GFA will now hold an important meeting on Wednesday in response to the nation's failure to qualify for AFCON for the first time since 2004.

Reacting after the Niger loss, GFA president Kurt Okraku issued a formal statement, saying:

"From the highest heights of world football on the 29th of March 2022 to the lowest ebb of AFCON qualifying matches. My heart bleeds.

"Definitely this is not what we want or what we bargained for. At this point, only cool heads can win and we as leaders of our sport will stay together, be honest with ourselves and fix this problem.

"The road to full recovery after normalisation is definitely bumpy and rough, but our collective efforts and patience will win and Ghana, our beloved country, will win.

"As a Black Stars fan and as the leader, I share in your pain and in our pain. We will rise from this temporary setback. It shall be well."
