African giants in 'hot pursuit' of Renard

With former Ivory Coast manager Herve Renard set to leave his current post, an African giant is now reportedly in hot pursuit of his services.

The 55-year-old has confirmed that he will be departing the France women's national team after the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, a development that has excited the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), according to AfricaSoccer.com

The two-time Africa Cup of Nations winner had previously announced his decision to leave the side earlier this year, and reaffirmed his decision at a press conference this week as his charges prepare to compete in Olympic action next month.

The NFF, meanwhile, are believed to see Renard as the ideal candidate for their hot seat, and are said to be actively pursuing the manager to fill the position recently vacated by Finidi George, who resigned earlier this month after his appointment in April.

It has also been suggested that the French tactician is eager to return to managing a team on the continent where he won the AFCON with Zambia in 2012, before doing it again with Ivory Coast in 2015.

The Frenchman is one of five managers who have won the tournament on two occasions, but is the only coach to have done so with two different nations.

Despite the NFF's reportedly strong interest in securing the manager's services, however, it also suggested that securing his services would not be a straightforward affair as they would face considerable competition for the tactician's signature.

Renard, meanwhile, has insisted that being able to manage the French women's national team is something he is proud of.

"It will be the last, it's the home stretch and when we are in an international competition sometimes, it stops very quickly, whatever the date," he said, per GHANAsoccernet

"Once the last match is over, sometimes there is great joy but everyone goes their separate ways.

"I'm used to it, this will be my 11th international competition.

"It won't be without a bit of emotion. The pride of having worn this French team uniform and finishing on a very good note.

"There is still a step to climb, but I am sure that the French team will win a title in the short to medium term. Hoping it will be as soon as possible."

The coach will be hoping that his last exploits with the side result in an Olympic medal that ends France's unwanted run of never having won a major competition in women's football.
