Ahly boss 'seeks answers' for SA star's strike against them

Al Ahly boss Marcel Koller is understood to have sought answers from a specific player after a South African star scored against them on Sunday.

Fagrie Lakay's recent move from Pyramids FC to Ceramica Cleopatra on loan has gone slightly under the radar.

On 2 October, the Cape Town-born star joined Cleopatra on loan until June 2025, with his new side having the option to make the deal permanent at the end of the season.

The 27-year-old has made an instant impact, too, scoring on his debut in a 2-1 defeat to Al Ahly in the Egyptian Super Cup on Sunday.

However, his goal, which came in first-half stoppage time, drew an inquest into Al Ahly goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir's handling of the situation by coach Koller.

Lakay had made a charging run into the opposition box, forcing Shobeir to come out and try to claim the ball from a deep cross, but he was unsuccessful as an Al Ahly defender got to it first.

The defender knocked the ball into the path of a Cleopatra player, who then squared it to Lakay for a well-composed finish to level the score at 1-1.

With Shobeir caught in no man's land and seemingly at fault, Koller is said to have sought answers from the shot-stopper for his perceived error, according to Algomhor.com.

It is said the shot-stopper told Koller he felt he was closer to the ball than Lakay, therefore assuming he would beat him to it.

Shobeir explained that it was the intervention of his Al Ahly teammate that made matters complicated as he knocked the ball away from his grasp, with Koller said to have accepted this explanation.

Notably, Lakay's loan move to Cleopatra comes after the player reportedly rejected an initial approach from the club

It is believed the Bafana Bafana star wanted to receive his full salary ahead of the new season, which is said to be in the region of $600 000 (R10.6 million).

However, Cleopatra initially pulled out of the deal as they deemed the fee too high to settle in one instalment.
