CAF & FIFA 'under pressure' over Eto'o match-fixing scandal

CAF and FIFA have come under increasing pressure over the match-fixing scandal involving Cameroonian Football Federation president Samuel Eto'o.

The 42-year-old's role as president of the Cameroon FA is currently under threat after FIFA and CAF were urged to remove him from his current duties.

A group of Cameroon officials have reportedly addressed both FIFA president Gianni Infantino and CAF president Patrice Motsepe in a letter questioning why Eto'o has not yet been stripped of his presidential status.

The way in which the former Indomitable Lions striker has conducted himself since being appointed to the role in December 2021 has been questioned.

In August, CAF confirmed that they had opened an investigation into allegations of improper conduct against the FC Barcelona legend after audio clips emerged of him allegedly promising a club they would be promoted to the Cameroonian top flight, with several amateur clubs in the country calling for the former Inter Milan star to step down as a result.

Eto'o also cut a controversial figure during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar after he kneed a man in the face, an incident that was captured on video, outside a stadium.

The letter written by the group reportedly referenced other not-so-savoury incidents the former striker is said to have been involved in.

This includes his suspended prison sentence in a tax fraud case, and his reported deal with sports betting company 1XBET, which the group has alleged to be a "flagrant violation" of FIFA's code of ethics.

"How can FIFA continue to remain silent in the face of so many scandals that compromise public confidence in sporting ethics and the sincerity of matches?" the letter stated, as per GOAL.

"Can you imagine FIFA and UEFA remaining silent when the president of a European football federation is suspected of match-fixing, with audio recordings to back it up?

"Can you imagine FIFA and UEFA keeping quiet while the president of a European soccer federation signed a personal ambassadorship contract with a sports betting operator?"
